Pair of MCM 1961 Swedish DUX Teak Dressers, Credenzas, Night Stands – Mid-Century Modern

This exceptional pair of Swedish teak cabinets was manufactured by DUX in December 1961, as indicated by the original maker's marks and factory stamps. For approximately sixty-five years, they remained together in the same waterfront home overlooking Puget Sound before finding their way to our workshop.

Their timeless proportions, clean architectural lines, recessed teak pulls, and beautifully crafted solid teak legs embody everything collectors appreciate about Swedish Modern furniture from the early 1960s. Whether used as MCM bedroom dressers, nightstands, dining room storage, or a dramatic sideboard spanning nearly eight feet, they make a striking statement while remaining refined and understated.

Dimensions
Combined (both cabinets side-by-side)
Width: 95½"
Depth: 18½"
Height: 31⅛"
Upper Drawers (4 total)
Interior: 21¾" W × 15¼" D × 3" H

Lower Drawers (8 total)
Interior: 21¾" W × 15¼" D × 6½" H

Professionally Restored
Although these cabinets had been carefully used and showed no water damage, structural issues, or odors, the original finish had become tired and uneven after more than six decades.

The restoration included:
+ Sanding the tops, drawer fronts, cabinet sides, legs, and apron to bare wood
+ Refinishing with a custom hand-applied ultra-flat oil finish designed to preserve the natural appearance of aged Scandinavian teak
+ Cleaning and preserving the original drawer interiors
+ Refinishing one drawer interior that had old ink staining
+ Preserving the original recessed teak drawer pulls and original hardware
+ Cleaning and adjusting the drawers to ensure smooth operation

Rather than creating a glossy modern finish, our goal was to recreate the soft, natural appearance these cabinets would have had when they first left Sweden.

Beautiful Scandinavian Construction
One of the common misconceptions surrounding Scandinavian furniture is that it was built entirely from solid teak.

Even premium Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian manufacturers used teak selectively because it was already one of the world's most expensive hardwoods during the 1950s and 1960s.

These cabinets are constructed exactly as high-quality Scandinavian furniture of the era was intended:
+ Solid teak legs
+ Teak veneered exterior surfaces
+ Solid pine dovetailed drawer boxes
+ Original recessed solid teak pulls
+ Original felt-lined divided upper drawers

The craftsmanship throughout is excellent, particularly the dovetailed solid pine drawers, which remain exceptionally clean and structurally sound.

Two of the four upper drawers retain their original felt lining and removable dividers, both remarkably well preserved after more than six decades.

Original Character
Because these cabinets spent decades in the same home, one cabinet received slightly more natural sunlight than the other. As a result, several drawer fronts have developed a slightly warmer tone than the rest.

Despite extensive color matching during restoration, we chose to preserve this subtle variation rather than over-correct it with heavy toners or stains. We believe it contributes to the authenticity and character of the pair.

Condition
+ These cabinets are approximately 65 years old and are being represented honestly.
+ They are in outstanding vintage condition but are not perfect.

Notable imperfections include:
+ A few small areas where the original veneer had become exceptionally thin over time and now show minor color variation following restoration.
+ A small chip on the front right corner of one cabinet top.
+ Several very light hairline scratches on that same top that are only visible under certain lighting conditions. Removing them completely would have required excessive sanding and risked damaging the original veneer, so we chose preservation over perfection.
+ A small area of discoloration on the right side of one upper drawer front.
+ Two small age-related cracks in one recessed drawer pull. The remaining pulls are in excellent condition.
+ One cabinet has more significant veneer thinning on its left exterior side panel. When the cabinets are displayed side-by-side, this panel is completely hidden from view. If desired, we can professionally re-veneer this side panel with matching teak veneer for an additional $150 prior to delivery.

We are happy to provide additional detailed close-up photographs of every notable imperfection upon request.

Why We Love This Pair
Authentic Scandinavian furniture has become increasingly difficult to find, particularly matching pairs that have remained together since new. These cabinets retain everything that makes Swedish Modern furniture so desirable - clean proportions, exceptional craftsmanship, understated elegance, and practical everyday function.

Our goal throughout the restoration was never to make them look brand new. Instead, we sought to preserve the character that only sixty-five years of careful ownership can create while ensuring they are ready to be enjoyed for decades to come.

Whether placed in a bedroom, dining room, office, or living space, this rare pair offers nearly eight feet of beautifully crafted Swedish storage that is unlikely to be duplicated.

I am happy to Facetime prior to ordering.

Once it's in the hands of the delivery company, I do not have any control over the equipment used, age, gender, race or ability of the drivers. We do not offer white glove delivery inside the home in the free shipping option - please contact us prior to purchase for additional labor rates and fees. Please also contact us prior to ordering if there are any sort of logistical shipping restrictions - eg. height and weight limits, restricted access, truck size limitations, etc. These restrictions can result in additional fees and may affect the ability to deliver. ****
